Self Portrait
A self portrait is one of the most difficult pieces for an artist, and mine has been no exception. I originally started my self portrait on an 18" x 22" canvas. I should have known that this would cause me problems. No matter how I worked on it, I couldn't seem to bring the piece together. Then I realized that all my other pieces were larger and that may be my block. I am now painting on an 24" x 36" canvase and things are flowing much better.
I started this piece sometime in July of 2008. From here on in, I will date my work so that they will be easier to follow.

After much thought, I decided to include the photograph that I am working from. It is an old photograph of me (I was in my early twenties), but it is from a very fond memory. It is a Polaroid and a bit blurry, but when considering my self portrait, this is the image that came to mind. After adding it to the page, it was informative to view this image and my current work next to each other. I now see places that I was off a bit and need to fine tune.

I finally got to work on this piece for a bit. I focused mainly on the left eye and upper left hand corner of the painting. I still have a long ways to go, but I do feel that I am making some good progress, even if it is rather gradual. While reviewing the pictures I have taken, I can see that I need to work on my photography skills. Because of this, I have broken out my camera stand so that, hopefully, the images will appear closer in composition from now on.
